Planned Itinerary Pre-Cruise Land Adventure
Day 1: Santiago de Chile
Overnight, incl. breakfast at hotel in Santiago de Chile.
Day 2: Santiago de Chile / San Pedro Atacama
Morning transfer to Santiago de Chile airport for direct flight to Calama. From here, you will be transferred to San Pedro de Atacama, located almost 8,000 ft. above sea level. The transfer through the Atacama Desert takes about one and a half hours. San Pedro is a small village with narrow alleys and traditional adobe houses, and known as the archaeological capital of Chile.
Check-in at Cumbres Atacama Hotel, built in the indigenous Ayllus, or Atacama architecture style and located on 8 hectares of land. The hotel offers a unique experience combining comfort, relaxation, fine cuisine and explorations into the mystique of northern Chile.
Enjoy dinner at the hotel and get a good night´s sleep.
Day 3-5: San Pedro de Atacama
Breakfast at your hotel. Take the opportunity to relax at the hotel swimming pool or choose from a variety of local trips to visit such interesting sights as geysers, saltpans, high Andes lagoons - all just a short journey away. An experienced team of guides accompanies the excursions.
Morning departure to the archeological site of Tulor - the oldest vestige and first human settlement in the Atacama Salt Flat (from approx. 9 a.m. to 1 p.m). Miraculously preserved, the site is known as the “Cradle of the Likan Antai culture” and dates back 2,000 years.
An evening excursion (from approx. 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.) goes to Moon Valley, declared a nature sanctuary and natural monument. Climb the Duna Mayor (Major Dune), which provides a beautiful view of the Cordillera de la Sal, Valley of Death,Salt Flats, and other sights, all gorgeously illuminated by a dramatic sunset.
The next day is an early morning tour to the Tatio Geysers (from approx. 5:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.), some 55 miles from San Pedro de Atacama and 13,000 ft. above sea level. The geothermal field is closely linked to volcanic activity in the area and features huge steam columns. Be on the lookout for families of vicuñas and maybe even foxes and Andean ostriches. Stop at Puritama, famous for its hot pools, where warm water flows through the rocks. Return to your hotel in the early afternoon to freshen up and enjoy the establishment’s amenities.
Lunch and dinner at the hotel. Overnight.
Day 5: San Pedro de Atacama/Santiago
You will be transferred back to Calama Airport in the morning for the flight back to Santiago de Chile and transfer to your hotel.
The following overnight is part of your Antarctica cruise.
