Sightseeing Tour of Santarem and Alter do Chão
The tour of Santarem includes stops at the Fish market from where it is possible to watch the fresh water dolphin. Then we pass the Cathedral, Fisher Square and the river front avenue where you can see the meeting of the waters of Tapajos and Amazon rivers.
Considered among the top 5 beaches in Brazil, Alter do Chão is a beautiful Amazon beach resort located in the bay of Rio Tapajós. It sits beneath two rolling green hills, one of which is shaped like a church altar, giving the area its name. Heading out of town towards Alter Do Chao, you’ll stop to visit the Manioc Flour House. Walk a short distance through the rain forest to visit a local family. Watch them prepare manioc flour, an Amazonian staple; take in a demonstration of the traditional way to extract latex from a rubber tree, and see a display of the implements used by 19th-century rubber collectors.
Your guide accompanies you on a stroll through the compound, pointing out trees used for native medicines and handicrafts. Continue out of town into rural Brazil to Alter do Chão. Relax and explore this charming village with its white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters. With about 2,000 inhabitants year round, you are sure to orient yourself quickly and easily.
This is a guided tour but you will also have the liberty to explore on your own before we return to Santarem.
