Underneath the Longyear Glacier, there is a hidden world of caves and passages, glittering snow crystals and icicles. This is of the few places in the world where it's possible to get underneath a glacier in wintertime.
Through the heart of the glacier
You get equipped with a headlamp, and then we enter this fascinating place. The entrance to the cave is tight so you have to sit down and slide down a steep 3–4 metres to drop into a large grotto. The temperature inside the cave is -3° C, while the Arctic winter outside is much colder. As you move inwards you will see that the ceilings are covered with icicles and lacy snow crystals glittering in the light of the headlamps. The ice and rock formations are astonishing – a crystal world that will take your breath away. We will provide headlights, helmets and experienced guides. All you need is solid winter shoes, waterproof outdoor clothing and a spirit of adventure!
