The fishing community of Kalvåg is situated far out to sea, with the Cape of Stadt to the north and the North Sea stretching outward to the west. In the 1860s, thousands of people worked in the town’s large
herring fisheries. Around 500 people now live in what is undoubtedly the most beautiful and best-preserved fishing village in Western Norway. Around the bay, sea houses are clustered together, protecting the old town atmosphere. You can visit the old herring salt houses. The Liset Salting House formerly housed a coppersmith’s, a carpenter’s shop, salt herring and cod liver oil production, along with a base for
the fishery. The tools and equipment lying about create an authentic impression that the workers in the early post-war years are simply absent for a five-minute break.
