Farsund was incorporated as a town in 1795. Trade and shipping were the foundation of its prosperity. For some years, Farsund (Norwegian for ‘The Town at the Sound’) could have called itself the world's largest shipping town if they would have compared the gross tonnage of Farsund's ships to the local population. The town center now includes Gåseholmen, a town within the town. Centrally located in the main part of the town is the marketplace, where you can sit at the water’s edge and watch the boats float toward town.

Farsund is also known for its exciting history of privateering. This dates back to the 1800s, locals fought invading British ships during the Napoleonic wars. The region has close ties to the Unites States, due to extensive emigration in the 1950s and 1960s.
