Get ready to journey through 3,000 years of history! During our 20-minute bus ride to Avaldsnes, our guide will tell us about the area’s fascinating and mighty past.

We’ll cross the bridge over Karmsundet, the narrow strait that gave Norway its name: it was once known as Nordvegen, ‘the way to the north’. Viking kings ruling here forced ships to sail this shipping route, becoming rich and powerful in the process.

We’ll tour Nordvegen History Center and the Viking Settlement, where we will hear the enthralling story of how Avaldsnes became Norway’s oldest royal seat. Enter a world of kings, sagas, poems, and a magic that was once as real to people as the physical world is to us today.

Next, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of beautiful Olavskirken and see the archeological excavations of the royal estate. Built by King Håkon Håkonsen in the 13th century, the church is the largest cultural monument at Avaldsnes.
