Highlights of the South Coast & South Cape

On this overland excursion between Kristiansand and Farsund—or the other way around—you’ll see why southern Norway is such a popular destination, known by Norwegians as ‘the smiling south’.

Kristiansand is the main city of the region and the fifth largest in Norway. There’s a fascinating blend of old and new architecture that you can admire on a brief sightseeing tour of its landmarks.

West of Kristiansand is Farsund, on the scenic Lista peninsula that juts into the North Sea. Farsund is an old pirate town. In more recent history, it has a connection with America, as much of its population emigrated there in the 19th century. You might spot little pieces of Americana there today, including gleaming Buick, Cadillac, and Pontiac cars.

Not far from Farsund, the cast-iron Lindesnes Lighthouse stands proud, a famous landmark at the South Cape of Norway that marks the entrance to the Skaggerak Strait. We’ll have lunch here, including locally made sourdough, fresh savory fishcakes, leg of lamb, and moose sausages.

Your tour will also visit Skudeneset farm and vineyard, the northernmost vineyard in the world. Learn about the wine-making process from the passionate vintner and taste the award-winning Sygna sparkling wine. Over at the basketry, the winemaker’s wife will impress you with her willow-weaving skills.

Mandal is a town halfway between Farsund and Kristiansand with whitewashed houses typical in the region. Stroll down main street and take in the charming atmosphere or join the guide for a short walk.

No visit to the south coast would be complete without seeing the world’s largest underwater restaurant, Under, for a short visit and presentation. With Michelin Star status, Under’s dining room is 18 feet below sea level, immersing guests in Norway’s marine life.
