We drive the scenic route from Ulsteinvik to Årvik by bus. There, we go on the ferry to Dalsbygda. There will be several photo stops at different viewpoints en route to our destination, the lighthouse museum.
A craft passed down through generations
The Dalsfjord museum of lighthouses main task is to document and promote the history of those who built lighthouses, beacons, marks and mooring rings along the Norwegian coast, Svalbard and northern parts of Russia. In the early 1800’s a group of workers in Dalsfjord were known as good miners and stonemasons. The knowledge and skills passed from father to son for generations, and attracted accomplished workmen from the nearby villages as well.
The museum is spread over several buildings and has a large number of photos and a collection of technical equipment and tools. After spending some time here, we head back to the ship in our sturdy Polarcirkel boats.
