We use our Polarcirkel boats to reach Bud on the mainland, followed by the the island Bjørnsund. First visit is to the the museum in Bud, consisting of two parts: the Ergan coastal fort, a war history museum built around the German coastal fort from World War II, and the Coastal exhibition which is a natural and cultural exhibition in modernized buildings right next to the fort. The Ergan Fort was a German war fort that has been restored. The fort was built on Ergan during the period 1941-1945 and includes an operating room and command centre. You will see weapons, equipment and technical installations as well as personal equipment. The exhibition also tells the stories of the local war events. The coastal culture exhibition portrays life along the coast, over and under water, from the Stone Age to the present day. See exhibits showing the fishing village Bud’s history, and recent cultural history of the region, underwater archaeology from Hustadvika with finds from shipwrecks and gas production. You can also watch a movie about the Storegga slide that shaped the coast. In Bjørnsund there is a lighthouse from 1871, and we will make a hike out there to see it up close and hear the story.
