This adventure provides a genuine encounter with the Sámi - the indigenous people of Europe’s most northerly regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Our Sámi hosts invite us into the nature reserve of Dankarvågvatn, close to Tromsø. These traditional reindeer herders are renowned for their affinity with nature. You are transported to a frozen lake across snow-covered terrain by reindeer sledge or snowmobile, depending on the snow conditions. Here you can try your hand at ice fishing. Lying on a reindeer skin for insulation, you gently lower your line into a hole in the ice, and wait patiently for a fish to bite, meanwhile admiring the meditative beauty of the surrounding silent landscape. You also learn more about the Sámi people and their way of life through other cultural activities. We finish the tour with a hot drink beside a bonfire.
