Distinguished by numerous spires, towers and highly detailed ornamentation, Ålesund is renowned world-wide for its beautiful art nouveau architecture. This owes this to a devastating fire in 1904 that burned a large proportion of the city to the ground. Afterwards, the entire town was rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time, art nouveau. Ålesund today is a partner in the art nouveau network, a European web of co-operation created in 1999 for the study, safeguarding and development of art nouveau. Our stroll around Ålesund begins on the pier, where we are met by a local guide who takes us on a pleasant walk through the streets of this enchanting town. Along the way you pass the picturesque fishing port of Brosundet, the Apotekertorget square with its iconic fisherman and fisherman´s wife statues, and the city´s unique high street for shopping. This tour of Ålesund provides a great opportunity to savour both the rich history of the town and its charming street life.
