Distinguished by numerous spires, towers, and highly detailed ornamentation, Ålesund is renowned worldwide for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. This is due to a devastating fire in 1904 that burned a large part of the city to the ground. Afterward, the entire town was rebuilt in the fashionable Art Nouveau style of the time. Today Ålesund is a partner in the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, a European network created in 1999 for the research, conservation, and exposure of the Art Nouveau aesthetic and heritage. Our stroll around Ålesund begins at the pier, where we are met by a local guide who takes us on a pleasant walk through the streets of this enchanting town. Along the way you pass the picturesque fishing port of Brosundet; Apotekertorget square, with its iconic fisherman and fisherman’s wife statues; and the city’s unique shopping street. This tour of Ålesund provides a great opportunity to savor both the town’s rich history and its charming street life.
