Visit a small island in eastern Iceland and experience magnificent, unspoilt nature. We take a 50-minute boat ride from Djupivogur to Papey Island, the largest island off the east coast of Iceland and the only one populated until a few decades ago. There was only one farm and a church here in 1902. The highest point on the island is only 190 feet above sea level. Visitors to the island can see magnificent bird cliffs, seals, the old wooden Church and learn about its history. It is presumed that the island was inhabited by Irish monks during the Nordic settlement of Iceland. The monks were called “Papar" - hence the name of the island.
