From Höfn we drive through the beautiful Mýrar district, where steep mountains rise on the landward side and the Atlantic Ocean surges on the seaward side. Between the mountains, glacier 'tongues' extend downward to the low ground. The mighty Vatnajökull ice cap rises above; it is the largest ice cap outside the Arctic region.
We travel westward through pastoral landscapes squeezed between the shifting black sands on the seaward side and cliffs and glacial outflows landward. Here, agriculture and wildlife exist in harmony; the grasslands are rich in wild flowers and harbor a variety of nesting birds.
Leaving the highway we follow a steep, winding road up to the Skálafellsjökull Glacier and onto the Vatnajökull ice cap. The ascent may raise the hair on some heads, but there's no denying that it is most definitely spectacular.
Switching to a glacier vehicle (4X4 Jeep, snow scooter, or a Snow Truck, to be decided by the local tour operator based on the conditions on the glacier), we then move onto this brilliantly white, majestic, and peaceful world. Thrilling trails lead over the wide expanse of snow.
After this exhilarating experience, the driver retraces the previous route and we head back down to the coast and continue back to Höfn and your vessel.
