This glacier lagoon is said to be one of the greatest wonders of nature in Iceland. The surface of the lagoon is at sea level and seawater flows in at high tide. Huge blocks of ice constantly break off the glacier, Breiðamerkurjökull, next to the lagoon. Breiðamerkurjökull is an outlet of the Vatnajökull glacier. Although the lagoon is not very wide, at up to 250 meters deep, it is the deepest lake in Iceland. All this makes for an impressive sight with large icebergs floating in the lake.
On the boat
We leave Djúpivogur by bus and drive to the glacier lagoon. Once here, you are in for an exciting boat trip. Sail among the huge icebergs in the unique scenery of Jökulsárlón and get close to the icebergs. On the boat, you get to taste the 1000-year-old ice, and if you are lucky you might even see some seals.
Popularised in films
Jökulsárlón has been the setting for several films. These include: Beowulf and Grendel, Tomb Raider, Batman Begins, Die Another Day and A View to a Kill.
After the boat trip, lunch will be served in the café next to the lagoon. On the way back to Djúpivogur there will be a sightseeing tour in Hofn, a small fishing village known for its stunning mountain views
