Upon leaving the island capital of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, this tour takes you south along wonderfully scenic and mountainous roads to the southern Isle of Harris and its capital port town of Tarbert. You’ll spend some time in this busy little town before continuing southwest to Luskentyre, where you can enjoy some time on the beautiful Horgabost beach.
You’ll take the views of the uninhabited island of Taransay, made famous in the BBC reality television program Castaway 2000, which followed a group of 36 men, women, and children tasked with building a community on this remote Scottish island. Your guide will also tell about the ‘rocket mail experiment’. German inventor Gerhard Zucker made two unsuccessful attempts to deliver the mail by rocket between the islands of Scarp and Harris in 1934, a one-mile stretch we often impassable by boat due to dangerous tidal currents. This story was made into a 2001 film called The Rocket Post.
There will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs at viewpoints along the way before heading back to the northern Isle and Stornoway.
- The tour will be the same 'there and back' as there is no viable circular route for coaches
