A scenic 1.5 hrs drive through the beautiful Portuguese countryside leads to the medieval town of Óbidos, dating back to 308 B.C. Since King Dinis gave his young bride the town, Óbidos has been given as a wedding gift to all Portugal’s queens. You will feel as if you are traveling back in time as you explore the picturesque streets.
Visit the 17th-century Parish Church of Santa Maria, with its magnificent interior tiles in blue and white. From Pillory Square, you may continue exploring the narrow streets by yourself. There are fine shops to browse in, or you may want to hike up to the castle (now a hotel), or explore the old lookout path on top of the wall that encircles the city. This free time in Óbidos is an excellent opportunity to do some great craft shopping or soak up the ambience in one of the charming outdoor cafés.
