Guimarães is one of Portugal’s most historic cities. This was where the first king of Portugal was born and also where the re-conquest of Portugal from the Moors began. Guimarães is often referred to as the birthplace of Portugal. There are many historical monuments to see, which is why UNESCO has added it to their list of World Heritage Sites.
A one hour drive from the port takes you to the town of Guimarães, where you start the excursion with a visit to the Dukes Palace. Inside this impressive 15th century building, later occupied by the Portuguese dictator Salazar, you will be able to appreciate the many wonderfully furnished rooms filled with tapestries, paintings, and furniture.
Afterward you have the chance to stroll around the picturesque city center, where you'll visit the 10th-century castle where Don Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, was born. Experience charming cobblestone streets, visit the famous Santa Maria street, and explore Oliveira square, with its many beautiful medieval buildings.
You will have time to explore at your leisure before rejoining the coach and traveling back to the ship.
