Explore the largest, protected coastal Atlantic forest in Europe and be enchanted by its beautiful flora, fauna and scenery.
After crossing Fornelos Hanging Bridge over the Eume River, we trek approximately two kilometres (1.3 miles) into Fragas do Eume Nature Park. Home to many endangered species of plants and animals, the forest also echoes a unique history, particularly during Medieval times.
Following a trail along the Eume River, you are in the midst of Galicia’s Fragas, mixed woodland mainly of oak, alders, birch, ferns and ash trees. The vegetation creates the ideal habitat for an enormous variety of woodland wildlife.
Take a moment to experience and capture on camera one of the many waterfalls we encounter along the densely forested mountain slope.
At the end of the trail, we reach Caaveiro Monastery, a real architect’s jewel. Built in the 9th century, it stands at the heart of the park and displays the marks of several transformations over the centuries.
A well-deserved stop is made at Taverna de Caaveiro, where you can quench your thirst with a refreshing soft drink, coffee or tea and snack.
