Built by a Swiss cable car manufacturer, Von Roll, in 1966, the cable car is a must for all visitors to the Rock of Gibraltar. The Top Station is the best place to meet our most famous residents, the Barbary apes, and appreciate the views and use the unique hand-held personal multimedia guide – all included in the price of your ticket. It is the perfect location to relax while enjoying the spectacular vistas with a hot or cold drink and a light snack. The Top of the Rock Souvenir Shop is also packed with unique gifts not available in town.
The highlights on this excursion are many, and come like pearls on a string:
On this tour you will stop at the very top of the Rock of Gibraltar, with stunning views from both sides of the rock, over 1,300 feet above sea level. Here, you meet the rock’s main pack of approximately 40 Barbary 'apes' of all ages and sizes. Although the species is commonly referred to as the 'Barbary ape', it is in fact a macaque, a kind of monkey. Introduced in 1750, at present there are approximately 200 monkeys roaming free on the upper rock. Please be careful. No touching or feeding is allowed, as they can bite.
St. Michael's Cave
St. Michael's Cave is 984 feet above sea level, and you’ll have a 20-minute visit to this natural grotto to admire its beauty with stalactites and lighting display. Inhabited by the Neanderthals and visited since the time of the Romans, it was also prepared as an emergency hospital during WWII. Today it is a main tourist attraction and also used for concerts and social events.
After the exhilarating cable car ride to over 1,350 feet above sea level, take in the scenery, take a photo with an 'ape', and buy a 'Top of the Rock' souvenir.
