After a one-hour journey along one of Germany’s many Autobahnen, you will arrive at the fairy tale–like city center of Bremen and experience its historic highlights on a walking tour.
Your tour will include all the landmarks and attractions that should not be missed, starting with the city's most famous landmark: The graceful statue of the Knight Roland, who has been smiling down on the marketplace since 1404 and symbolizes freedom and justice. It is the most well-known of the many Knight Roland statues that can be found worldwide. Then you will visit the market square, considered the most beautiful in Europe, and where the architectural styles of five different eras are visible.
You'll pass the 600-year old Bremer Rathaus (Old Town Hall), Bremen’s most proud and prime example of distinct Gothic architecture with it magnificent facade, which dates back to 1405. From here you will walk to the St. Petri Cathedral, which originates from the first half of the 13th century, for a visit into its Bleikeller (Lead Cellar), where mummified bodies from the 16th and 17th century can be seen. What made these bodies mummify and how did they get there? Many theories exist …
Have you ever heard the tale about the music-making animals that were on their way to Bremen? Your next stop will be at the charming, famous, and internationally acclaimed bronze statue of the Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Bremer Town Musicians), sculpted in 1951.
Then you'll make your way through the Böttcherstrasse, a street museum with many restored medieval buildings that now houses high-quality artists and craftsman’s shops. You'll continue to the Schnoorviertel, the oldest residential quarter still intact, and admire its picturesque, tiny houses, some of which date back to the 15th century; cozy taverns; and small shops.
Time permitting, you will spend some time at your leisure, during which you can stroll through Bremen’s city center, with numerous shops, cafés, and restaurants. This is also an opportunity to select and enjoy a delicious German snack.
Then you will return to Bremerhaven.
