Bordeaux - Saint Emilion & Train through the Vineyards
There is no better place to start a visit to this attractive region than at Saint Emilion, the heartland of Merlot grape growing. This area produces delicious, rich, round wines.
The vines on the 'hill of a thousand chateaus’ reach right up to Saint Emilion's 13th-century town walls and the surrounding moat dug out of solid rock. Members of the local wine brotherhood, the Jurats, proclaim the vintage banns in much the same way as their ancestors did during the reign of Richard the Lionheart.
You will enjoy a guided walking tour of the upper part of the village, especially suited for gentle walkers. After your guided orientation tour, you will have time at your leisure for shopping and exploring.
Then you board the St Emilion little train for a tour of the vineyards. You learn about three Premiers Grands Crus Class A (Château Angelus, Pavie, Ausone), twelve Premiers Grands Crus Class B and three Grands Crus Class.
At the end of your ride, you visit Chateau Rochebelle, a splendid Saint Emilion Grand Cru Class wine estate and its stunning underground galleries, used as wine cellars, before proceeding to the tasting room for some wine lover time!
Your coach will then take you back to the ship in Bordeaux.
