Dartmouth is the gateway to Dartmoor National Park, a vast area of sparsely inhabited moorland covering approximately 600 square miles.

Enjoy panoramic views of Dartmoor. Steeped in legend and myth, your guide will recount some of the age-old stories of this vast wilderness. Pass the Victorian prison at Princetown as you head into the heart of Dartmoor. Pause for photographs at scenic points along the way.

On the edge of the moor lies Buckfast Abbey. The original 11th-century Buckfast Abbey fell into ruin after the dissolution of the monasteries. Four monks returned in 1882 and in 1906 began the monumental task of rebuilding the church themselves. It took them 31 years, a feat made even more remarkable by the fact that only one of them had previous building experience. This splendid church is a mix of early English and Norman styles, and the only feature distinguishing it from the original is that it looks ‘new’. A video presentation and small exhibition explains the monks’ achievement and their present-day work. They are famous for their stained glass, and the abbey contains plenty of fine examples.

Enjoy time at leisure at Buckfast Abbey before returning to Dartmouth.
