Castle Espie is one of 10 visitor sites in the UK managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, a conservation charity that protects and restores important and threatened wetland habitats across the globe. Nestled on the shores of Strangford Lough in Do. Down, Northern Ireland, this wildlife kingdom measures 60 acres and is home to Ireland’s largest collection of native and exotic water birds, bats, and migrant birds. It is the only center of its kind in Northern Ireland, offering guests a chance to get closer to nature and learn about some of the world’s most threatened wildfowl species.

Explore the woodlands and shore-view walks. The camouflaged birdwatching sites hidden around the reserve are perfect for spotting wildlife. Explore the Sustainability Trail, whose ecological design produced buildings that work in harmony with their natural environment. The on-site visitor center and Limekiln Observatory are great examples. Nature inspired their shapes, their construction materials, and the way they function. The trail takes guests from the visitor center around the wetland treatment system and through to the Crannog, Limekiln Observatory, composting toilet, and finishes by the wetland treatment system. The visitor center boasts a gallery of Ireland’s only environmental art-space, hosting the work of many artists, sculptors, craftspeople and photographers. Experience nature through art on your visit.

Return to port with a brief panoramic view of Belfast en route.
