Sea kayaking has become an increasingly popular activity in Antarctica, and opportunities to explore this incredible area on a kayak exist at some of the most beautiful landing sites on the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland and South Georgia Islands. Sea kayaking allows program participants to appreciate Antarctica and its spectacular wilderness from a different perspective and in an uniquely interactive way.
On board our sailings with MS Midnatsol to Antarctica, two professional kayaking guides offer you basic training in mastering the kayak.
BASIC COURSE CERTIFICATION – SEA KAYAK
In this basic certification course, you will be introduced to the kayak and all its necessary equipment. After completing the course, you will have learned how to effectively maneuver the kayak and performed simple, practical kayaking exercises and drills. You will also become familiar with basic kayaking safety practices.
This course is up to 16 hours in duration over non-consecutive days, with sessions split over several days. Because this course is conducted in harsh conditions, the participant-to-guide ratio is very low, only four program participants per guide.
After a brief theoretical introduction, the course concentrates on practical exercises in the kayak on the water. Kayaking excursions on the water will be 2- to 4-hours in length.
Upon finishing the course, participants will obtain basic kayak certification from the Norwegian Paddle Association: Norsk Padleforbunds. This basic certification is equivalent to the 1-star courses at the British Canoe Union (BUC), for new paddlers in their first year of gaining paddling skills.
