Chignik is perched on the southern coast of the Unalaska Peninsula and is one of Alaska’s most beautiful small settlements. Venture ashore to explore the village, where the local fishing community will gladly receive you. Spawning salmon fill Chignik’s rivers throughout the summer months and you may be lucky enough to see the leaping fish as they make their way upstream.

Our expedition team will meet you at checkpoints around town to offer insight and guidance on this traditional Alaskan fishing village. Stroll up the roads and pathways past the small post office and learn about the settlement’s fishing pedigree at the local fish processing plant and cannery—the heart of the local industry. Before following the path back to the village, view the village’s small airport just a short distance from town. In the summer months, the fishing industry booms and the population swells as seasonal workers fill the town.

Keep your eyes on the skies, as Chignik’s sheltered conditions and plentiful fish support an abundant bald eagle population. Watch for bear tracks, as these animals can be frequently seen close to the settlement. Depending on availability, local bear guides may take us out of town into the green valley, where you may catch a glimpse of the brown bears that are common in the area.
