ORCA

ORCA is one of the UK’s leading whale and dolphin conservation charities, dedicated to the long-term protection of these beautiful animals and their habitats in the UK and European waters.

ORCA

Looking out for the ocean's giants

Founded in 2001, ORCA monitors vulnerable populations and works alongside various organisations and governments to create safer places for whales, and dolphins to thrive - ultimately improving the health and well-being of our oceans.

ORCA is just as passionate about people as it is about whales and dolphins. Their volunteers come from all walks of life with a common love for marine wildlife and conservation. By making science and conservation more accessible they can engage with more people, empowering them to want to care for and protect our blue planet.

ORCA first joined us on our expedition to Antarctica in 2019. Following this success, their Ocean Conservationists have been a part of our Expedition Teams on MS Maud and MS Otto Sverdrup.

Hurtigruten Expeditions & ORCA

As well as delivering guest-facing activities, ORCA's team of ocean conservations collect data for various research projects. We are also working with ORCA and Hurtigruten Technical Services to develop whale strike mitigation training for our bridge teams.

Get involved with ORCA

As one of the UK's leading whales and dolphin conservation charities, ORCA is consistently looking for new and engaging ways to interact with both the wider public and guests on board our Expedition ships.

One of the best ways to support and get involved is through the ORCA OceanWatchers app. This easy-to-use app allows you to record your sightings and helps you to identify what animal you spotted.

Worldwide monitoring

Whilst most of ORCA's work takes place in UK & European waters, our Expeditions travel to remote areas across the globe allowing ORCA to work in other oceans worldwide.

Protecting habitats

ORCA also works to create safe havens for whales and dolphins to flourish and thrive, away from the dangers of commercial fishing and traffic. Ultimately improving the health of the sea for all marine life.

Training

ORCA is leading the way in protecting whales and dolphins from their biggest threat, ship strikes. Every year large numbers of whales are killed when they hit big ships, primarily within the shipping industry, and the waters around the North East Atlantic are some of the busiest. Working alongside Hurtigruten Expeditions and other maritime organisations, ORCA is providing extensive training and guidelines to crews on how to reduce this threat and helping to save the lives of these beautiful animals.
