Makasutu Cultural Forest is a 1,000-acre (405 hectare) located within a palm forest on a river called the Mandina Bolong. Adapted from a local Mandinka word meaning "holy and sacred deep forest". Makasutu is an eco-park that offers a unique look at The Gambia.
  • Explore the Makasutu palm forest and its many ecosystems.

  • Keep your eyes peeled for a tantalising glimpse of the local wildlife.

  • Enjoy a walk through the forest and appreciate the local flora and fauna.

  • Guided boat trip in the mangroves.

Driving starts from the Ports at 0830hrs to Makasutu Cultural forest with just under an hour drive. Makasutu is a palm forest situated on the banks of a beautiful meandering tributary of the river Gambia (Madina Bolong), encompassing many different echo systems including dense forests, savana and mangrove regions. The environment encompassing this forest is home to hundreds of varieties of birds, three spices of monkeys, monitor lizards, pygmy deer, mangoose to name but a few and if you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of migrating baboons that make the forest their home for a number of months each year.

Upon arrival at Makasutu, you will have the chance for a tea or coffee or some other form of refreshment. A small talk will be given before the forest walk is starting.

During your day there are many different activities on offer - river trips on traditional " dug canoes" or small boats, guided walks through the forest, bird watching and animal observation.

First, you will take a trip down the river on dugout canoes or small boats, while drifting out the waters seeing wildlife, fishermen and women collecting oysters from the mangroves. This is very relaxing and has some wonderful views of the region.

After the boat trip, there is the opportunity to go on a bush walk where you can see some of the flora and fauna of the area plus a chance to see some of the animals mentioned above.

A drive back to base camp for refreshment before driving back to Banjul Port.
