Join an expedition cruise in Norway from Hamburg, Dover or Bergen to North Cape and back. These expeditions are the perfect choice to uncover gems of the stunning Norwegian coast, exclusively handpicked by those who know it best.
Explore the most scenic spots the coastline has to offer and enjoy included excursions to experience even more. Instead of short visits to lots of ports, we spend several hours to really get to know each area, giving you ample time in the magnificent scenery to bask in summer’s Midnight Sun or gaze up at the Northern Lights.
When to see
Situated around the Arctic Circle, Norway is one of the best places in the world to see the incredible northern lights. For a high chance of seeing the lights, you should travel in the winter season from Early September to Mid March. During this time, the Arctic sky is dark enough for the northern lights to be visible in the right conditions. A majority of Hurtigruten’s ports in Norway are above the Arctic Circle, which increases your chances of seeing the aurora. In fact, if you sail on selected Hurtigruten cruises and don’t see the lights, you are entitled to a free cruise thanks to our Northern Lights Promise.
Sailing Norway’s coastline from June to August is like a midsummer night’s dream. Experience round-the-clock daylight and the Midnight Sun above the Arctic Circle, where the sun never sets. The intense extended daylight allows you more time to explore and discover the wonder of this dramatic and diverse coastline. On North Cape, located at 71° north, the midnight sun can be visible as early as 15th May.
In summer we also visit the famous Geirangerfjord. This deep blue UNESCO-protected fjord is surrounded by towering mountain peaks, rushing waterfalls and lush vegetation, making it an area of astounding natural beauty. Excursions allow you to get off the ship to lookout areas in the fjord and other amazing sights in the area such as Trollstigen.
Travelling in the spring season from March to May is a truly unique Norwegian adventure, with three seasons in one voyage! After a long, dark winter, the sun reappears and breathes new life along Norway’s coastline. Daylight returns in the south, allowing for fun outdoor activities and coastal exploration. Up north above the Arctic Circle you can get the ultimate Norwegian experience, as winter and snow still dominate the landscape.
Autumn is a particularly beloved season in Norway. Peak season has ended but the temperatures are still mild, making it the ideal time for outdoor exploration and enjoying beautiful scenery. As autumn approaches, the days grow shorter, the air crisper and the colors altogether more spectacular. Low skies bring bright red, yellow and orange colors. The views over the mountains are much clearer, free from the summer haze. Sailing along the coast, you will witness the colors change, as summer fades and winter edges nearer.
All year round, and especially in the summer months, there is a myriad of music festivals in Norway, covering both popular genres, as well as experimental music. On 17th May we celebrate the Constitution Day with huge parades that take place across the country, and onboard our ships!. Christmas is also great time to visit. With decorations everywhere, Oslo is a glorious sight all through December, where you can experience a fairytale-like white Christmas with cheerful markets.
In Norway, whales are most commonly found in the north between Lofoten and Hammerfest. You can see most whale species year round, but peak season is around summer, when longer days offer better chances of spotting the whales feeding. The most common whale to spot along the Norwegian coast is the sperm whale, but you may also see pilot whales, minke whales, humpbacks and, dolphins. Orcas or Killer Whales can be spotted during the winter months.
