New Year in the Far North

Join us on a very special New Year’s celebration on a winter cruise to the famous landmarks and hidden gems of Northern Norway.

On this cruise you explore a truly unique natural world. Northern Norway is wild and rugged like nowhere else on Earth. The landscape is varied, unspoiled, magnificent, awe-inspiring, beautiful… you run out of adjectives to describe it.

Arctic Magic

The Arctic winter weather may be cold and clear, or it might snow heavily at times. We work with the conditions and adapt our program as we go. Safety is always first and foremost!

Wildlife and Northern Lights

Whales approach the coast this time of year to feed on herring, so we will keep a close watch.  We also hope to see the magical Northern Lights and their fantastic colors.

We sail from Tromsø, visiting settlements and villages rich with fishing traditions, Sami history and polar expedition heritage. We will celebrate the New Year in Honningsvåg, near North Cape. We will make sure to enjoy the brief daylight and hope for crisp, clear nights and days. As evening falls, all eyes turn to the skies as we hunt for the amazing Aurora Borealis.

Day 1: Tromsø

Paris of the North

Tromsø brims with culture and history in a magnificent landscape.  The city is often described as the “Paris of the North,” and boasts friendly locals, wonderful shopping and great restaurants. Spend some time enjoying this Arctic town before embarking on your cruise with MS Spitsbergen.

Day 2: Lyngen Fjord

Spectacular Lyngen

Full Day - Exploration day

The famous Lyngen mountain range is known for its dramatic peaks and steep mountainsides that plunge into the fjord. If conditions allow, we will spend the morning exploring here. We might visit the charming fishing village of Havnnes, where stock fish is produced in the traditional way.

Day 3: Kjøllefjord

Winter Adventure

Full Day

Kjøllefjord is a small, vibrant fishing village with around 1,000 inhabitants. It offers an excellent view towards the ocean and Finnkirka rock formation. Enjoy a range of activity options, learning about Sami culture or explore the winter countryside on a snowmobile.

Day 4: Honningsvåg

Gateway to the North Cape

We spend the last day of 2020 in Honningsvåg with a range of optional activities. Visit the North Cape and stand on top of the plateau to sense being at the end of the world. In the evening, we will enjoy good company and delicious food as we celebrate New Year’s Eve.

Day 5: Hammerfest

New Year’s Day

Half Day

We sail to Hammerfest, the northernmost town in the world.  The small city will be quiet, and venues closed as this is New Year’s Day, but if conditions are good, we will enjoy walking through the seasonally decorated streets and find a vantage point overlooking the scenic Arctic town.

Day 6: Alta

Winter Adventures

Half Day

We will be spending the day in Alta, our final call on this cruise. Alta is a small town with plenty of winter activities on offer. Join in on optional excursions, learning about Sami Culture or doing some snowmobiling or dogsledding.
