What we do

Testing of guests and vaccination certificate

We encourage all guests to present a negative COVID-19 test taken less than 72 hours before departure, unless you can provide a Norwegian or European vaccination certificate. If you come from abroad, we recommend familiarizing yourself with local COVID-19 regulations before you travel.

Social distancing

To give you more space, we’re sailing with a reduced passenger capacity. We’ve also changed how we operate our restaurants, landings, and facilities. The reduced capacity will also affect the excursions we offer and seat capacity in our restaurants.

Face masks

All of our crew members wear face masks and follow the strictest hand sanitation protocol. You must follow whatever face mask requirements are in place at the time of travel.

Testing of crew

Before embarking the ship, all crew members will be tested for COVID-19. They are also tested regularly aboard the ship.

Infection reducing measures

We encourage you to use hand sanitizer or, even better, to wash your hands regularly. We routinely clean and disinfect all the cabins and the frequently touched surfaces in common areas. Our air conditioning system provides a constant supply of fresh air instead of recycling the air on board.

If symptoms appear

It’s our responsibility to protect our guests and crew members against COVID-19 when traveling with us. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms during the cruise, please immediately alert the reception desk and self-isolate in your cabin. Our medical team will be alerted to immediately aid you in the best possible way.

Guest testing and vaccination certificate

  • Even though it is not a requirement to sail with us, we recommend that all guests test negative for COVID-19 less than 72 hours before departure or present a Norwegian or European vaccination certificate.

Hurtigruten Coastal Express provides COV19 antigen test (rapid test/hurtigtest) onboard with electronic certificate

  • From 6 September 2021, Hurtigruten Coastal Express will provide the COV19 antigen test (rapid test/hurtigtest) onboard with an electronic certificate. The service will be available throughout the entire stretch; Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen
  • This is first and foremost intended for guests who are departing Norway directly after their sailing with us – and have a requirement from the country of destination (or airline) to show such a certificate. It is the guest's responsibility to check which (if any) requirements are applicable before travelling to/returning to their destination post sailing
  • Booking a test appointment will occur onboard the ship
  • The price for the test (including the electronic certificate) is NOK 1100
    • Requirements for a guest to be able to receive their certificate are as follows:
      • Negative test result
      • Free of symptoms
      • No close contact with someone with COVID-19
      • Not in quarantine

Social distancing

  • We sail with a reduced number of guests to allow for social distancing.
  • Floor markings help indicate appropriate social distance throughout the ship.
  • Seating capacity in the onboard restaurants has been reduced and seating times are staggered.
  • Use of the fitness center, sauna, and hot tubs (for applicable ships) is limited to a few people at a time and each facility must be booked in advance.

Face masks

  • Guests over the age of 12 must wear face masks in all public areas of the ship, including on deck, when social distancing is not possible.
  • We recommend FFP2 or medical face masks and discourage self-made masks.
  • Face masks may even need to be worn in outside spaces where maintaining the recommended social distance is not possible.
  • Face masks must be worn during boarding and disembarkation.
  • You will also be required to wear a face mask during all excursions.
  • Our crew members wear face masks in all public areas, when preparing meals in the galleys, and when cleaning your cabin.

Crew

The crew are there to ensure that your sailing is a smooth and safe experience. They make sure all contact surfaces are continuously clean and sanitized. Crew members follow stringent protocols and all crew, including porters, are tested for COVID-19.

  • Before boarding the ship, all crew members have completed a COVID-19 training program for hygiene procedures and infection management. They will also have undergone thorough first-aid training.
  • As an advisor, we are proud to have Professor of Medical Microbiology, Ørjan Olsvik. He has more than ten years of international experience in infection control.
  • Most (if not all) crew members and transfer bus drivers are vaccinated against COVID-19 as part of Norway’s immunization program.
  • If a crew member develops COVID-19 symptoms during a cruise, he or she must isolate until they are cleared with a negative test result from our onboard medical team.
  • If the result is positive, we immediately carry out the tracking and testing protocol, in full cooperation with local authorities and the Norwegian Institute of Public health.

Cleaning

We have always followed the highest standards when it comes to the cleanliness of our ships. These processes have been further enhanced with new cleaning protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

  • All cabins and public areas are frequently disinfected.
  • In addition to thorough daily cleaning, all cabins are fully disinfected after check-out. The ship is deep cleaned after each cruise to prepare for the next adventure. All common areas are cleaned and disinfected several times per day.
  • We have implemented regular hygiene inspections. External partners perform announced—and unannounced—inspections on all ships.
  • We have an air condition system that provides a constant air supply. The air is never recycled.

Onboard restaurants

  • We’ve arranged for more dining sessions, which allows us to facilitate the recommended social distance by serving food to fewer people at a time.
  • We ask that guests arrive for their meals at the agreed time to keep long lines from forming.
  • All guests must wash or disinfect their hands outside our restaurants.
  • A temperature scanner will also be placed outside the restaurants. Instead of self-service buffets, our chefs will serve food directly onto your individual plate. Table service is in place in the bar, bakery, café, and bistro.
  • Kitchens will continue to uphold their usual high hygiene and quality standards and tables and menus will be sanitized immediately after use.

Excursions

We currently offer a select set of excursions, in accordance with national and local regulations.

  • Numbers may be limited on certain excursions to accommodate social distancing. This includes during transport on buses, ferries, or trains.
  • You must wear a face mask during all excursions and on transfer buses, ferries, or trains.

What you do

Traveling to and from Norway

The Norwegian government and local health organizations are constantly reviewing and adjusting entry restrictions into Norway. Vaccine certificates and quarantine requirements will differ, depending on your country of departure.

For the most up-to-date guidance on travel to Norway, check the Norwegian Institute for Public Health website.

The website covers:

  • country-specific quarantine and testing requirements
  • which vaccination certificates are accepted, if required (e.g. digital QR code)
  • which types of COVID-19 tests are accepted, if required

If your country of departure is subject to travel restrictions and you are unable to enter Norway to join your Norwegian Coastal Express cruise, you can rebook free of charge.

Please be aware that waiting times at airports can be much longer than normal. Some sections may even require over three hours to pass through.

Pre- and Post-Cruise Programs

Are you planning to join us for an added exploration of Norway before or after your cruise on the Norwegian Coastal Express?

  • Bus transfers will require you to socially distance and to wear a face mask.
  • The hotel may have similar requirements in public areas. Please check your hotel website for details.
  • If you develop COVID-19 symptoms during your Pre- or Post-Cruise Program, you must follow local testing and quarantine guidelines. For local guidelines, please visit the website of the Norwegian Health Directorate.
  • If you test positive for COVID-19 before your cruise begins, you will unfortunately not be allowed to embark the ship.

Airport check-in times, check-in desk locations and check-in procedures may have changed for many airlines due to travel restrictions currently in place globally to deal with COVID-19. Please check with your airline and airport before departure. For Norwegian airports, please visit the Avinor website here.

These modified procedures may cause a longer wait at airport security of up to three hours or more.

Unfortunately, domestic baggage transfer at Oslo Airport is temporarily closed. Travelers arriving into Oslo and transferring to a domestic flight (such as to Bergen or Kirkenes) must collect their baggage, take it through customs, and check it in again.

For the latest guidelines on COVID-19 testing requirements, please check the Norwegian Institute for Public Health.

If required, the Norwegian health authorities have established test centers at Oslo Airport, Bergen Airport, Trondheim Airport, Stavanger Airport, Bodø Airport and Ålesund Airport for passengers arriving to Norway from abroad. Follow signs upon arrival for the COVID-19 test. For more information, please visit the Avinor website.

Oslo Airport:

Dr. Dropin offers PCR and rapid COVID-19 tests in the test center behind the check-in desks in check-in area 3. Appointments should be booked in advance.

For more information and to book an appointment, go to the Dr. Dropin website.

Trondheim Airport:

The test center is located in the east part of the check-in area on the second floor. See information about the test center and about quick tests from KRY.

Bergen Airport:

Volvat offers quick tests in the check-in area. The test station has drop-in hours of: Monday to Saturday from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Stavanger Airport:

Klinikk Spero offers quick tests in the arrival hall. Booking an appointment in advance is recommended.

If you are uncertain about whether you are healthy enough to travel, please consult a doctor before traveling and arrange to take a COVID-19 test. Please avoid traveling if you suspect that you might be sick.

Before and after your cruise

Check. You must book your cruise at least two hours before your voyage. Due to current health regulations, we currently do not accept walk-ins.

Even though it is not required to sail with us, we recommend that guests test negative for COVID-19 less than 72 hours before departure or present a Norwegian or European vaccination certificate.

Please check the Norwegian Institute for Public Health website for more information.

If you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in contact with someone with symptoms in the preceding ten days, you will not be allowed to board.

We do not currently provide COVID-19 tests for disembarking guests.

Please see the Health Norway website for where to book a COVID-19 test in Norway. There are test centers at Oslo Airport, Bergen Airport, Trondheim Airport, and Stavanger Airport.

During your cruise

Use of the fitness center, sauna, and hot tubs (for applicable ships) is limited to a few people at a time and each facility must be booked in advance.

Yes, all guests over the age of 12 must currently wear face masks in our public areas. This also includes our gyms and outside areas when social distancing is not possible.

There are additional dining sessions and we ask guests to arrive punctually to their appointed meal times. You will also need to use the contactless fever scanner before entering the restaurant.

There are floor markings to indicate the recommended social distance. Our crew will help ensure that social distancing is being observed whenever guests board and leave the ship.

You may visit local communities and stroll around freely without having to stay in a group.

We will inform you aboard the ship about any restrictions in local harbors before we arrive there. If there is a coronavirus outbreak in the port, we do not recommend going ashore.

Selected excursions will be available with a limited number of participants. This also applies to onboard activities.

If a coronavirus outbreak is reported in a port, all excursions for that port will be canceled.
