Historical christening in majestic Lofoten
MS Spitsbergen is the name of Hurtigruten's new explorer ship - our first addition to the fleet in ten years. On the 6th of July we host a party and a christening ceremony with godmother Cecilie Skog in Svolvær to celebrate the special occasion.
The new ship gets her name from the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago, where Hurtigruten's founder Richard With started expedition tourism back in 1896. MS Spitsbergen will be christened in Svolvær, a place with a special place in our hearts - for almost 125 years we have brought millions of international guests to incredible experiences in Lofoten. The destination has been named the most beautiful islands in the world several times, and has been branded the best travel destination in the world by National Geographic.

MS Spitsbergen's godmother
The godmother of our new explorer ship is no other than the incredible Norwegian adventurer and explorer Cecilie Skog. Cecilie is the only woman to have visited both poles and the seven highest summits of the world. She's also the only woman to have skied from the mainland to the North Pole.

About MS Spitsbergen
The ship is modern and environmentally friendly, and we will make further improvements in order to reduce emissions and fuel consumption.
She will also be equipped and adapted for sailings in polar waters. The new ship's maneuverability and optimal size makes her very suitable for the operations we are performing today along the coast of Norwegian, and will bring Hurtigruten`s guests even closer to amazing nature experiences.
