A town full of contrasts

Tourists will appreciate Trondheim as a town full of contrasts, with monastery ruins, impressive wooden buildings, colorful wharfs, and a beautiful red-painted city bridge dating back to 1861.

The city is well known for its rich cultural life with a modern theatre and a popular symphony orchestra. Trondheim Symphony Orchestra has been on many successful international tours. The city's concert hall, Olavshallen, has excellent acoustics and features top-line performers throughout the year. Hurtigruten offers an excursion to the Ringve Museum of musical history, housed in beautiful old buildings.

Trondheim City

Hurtigruten offers several excursion when the ship is in Trondheim. One is called "Trondheim City Walk". We start at the 19th century harbour before walking to “Stiftsgården”, the royal residence and continue to the market square. Next stop is the Gothic-style Nidaros Cathedral. The impressive Nidaros Catherdral is a national monument. Built over the burial place of St. Olav, the patron saint of Norway, the construction of this enormous building, with its countless details and decorations, began as early as 1070.

Trondheim's twin city in the US is Vallejo, California since 1956. Other sister cities include Darmstadt, Germany; Dunfermline, UK; Graz, Austria; Odense, Denmark and Tampere/Tammerfors, Finland.
