The town is located in the nortwestern part of Nord-Trøndelag county in central Norway, approximately 200 Kilometers north of the city of Trondheim (320 km by road). Rørvik lies at the eastern part of the Vikna archipelago, on the Innervikna island at the western shore of Nærøysundet strait, facing the mainland on the eastern shore of the strait. The climate is maritime, and many private gardens have plum and apple trees even here at 65°N.
The municipality consists of approximately 6,000 islands, big and small, and its top elevation is Vattafjellet, 173 metres (≈568 ft) above sea level (there are higher hills on the mainland nearby in neighbouring municipalities).
