Highlights of Snaefellsnes

Among the highlights are friendly fishing villages, sea caves and examining one of the largest seabird societies in Iceland up close.

Description

Departure from the fishing village Grundarfjörður with its beautiful landmark Kirkjufell in the background. We continue through or by the fishing villages Ólafsvík, Rif and Hellissandur and around the west edge of Snaefellsnes. The landscape is characterized with sandy beaches, rocky shoreline and jagged mountains, crowned by the mysterious shimmering cone of the Snæfellsjökull glacier, starting point for Jules Verne´s Journey to the Center of the Earth. The first stop made is at Djupalonssandur, where we will hike/walk to the impressive shore, with its strange Rock formations. Then we continue past the Londrangar, the two prominent rocks, protruding from the coast just east of the lighthouse at Malarrif on the southern side of the Snaefellsnes peninsula to Arnarstapi. Here we will start a walk from the remarkably beautiful harbor in Arnarstapi which is surrounded by cliffs and considered by many the most beautiful harbor in Iceland. Just outside the harbor we follow the cliff side and you can examine and photograph one of the largest seabird societies in Iceland up close. Three large sea caves with stone bridges have been formed in the cliffs over the centuries and the boat enters two of them. The walk ends at the memorial stone made man Bardur Snaefellsas, the protector of Snaefellsnes. We continue to Budir, where we will start by having a 2-course lunch at Hotel Budir. After we walk is made to the black beautiful local church and one of the few yellow shores of Iceland. From Budir we drive over the Frodarheidi Heath, well-known in the past for one of the most haunted areas in Iceland. Return back to Grundarfjordur in the afternoon.
